What is typhoid fever?

Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection which is caused by a bacteria called Salmonella typhi. In a recent study, over 100 thousand cases of typhoid fever have been recorded. It is caused by contaminated food or water. However, a laboratory test(widal reaction or stool culture) is often required to test for typhoid fever using the blood or stool as the specimen. In addition, there are symptoms of typhoid fever:

  • Fever.
  • Severe headache.
  • Abdominal pain.
  • Constipation.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Vomiting.
  • Dry cough.
  • Joint and body pain.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Weakness.

Prevention of typhoid fever.

There are ways to prevent typhoid fever, most importantly, one needs to be guarded of what to take into the body.

  • Be mindful of what you eat and drink.
  • Take good drinking water.
  • Environmental sanitation must be practiced.
  • Practice good hygiene when cooking.

How can typhoid be treated?

Over time, varieties of drugs have been produced to treat typhoid fever, but most importantly, they are treated with antibiotics like; Augmentin, Ampicillin, Amoxicillin etc. In other words, drugs can also be given according to their symptoms if they persist e.g. Analgesics should be given if joint and body pain still persist, but most importantly, antibiotics should be given.

In addition typhoid fever can lead to death if not treated.
