Have you ever wondered why you feel dizzy when you get up from your bed, when you are working during the day or when you sit upright? According to researchers, 30% of the general population experience dizziness. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, dizziness means a temporary feeling that your sense of balance is not good and that you may fall. However, the medical term for dizziness is vertigo, people with vertigo feel as though they are moving or spinning or the world is moving around them.

Causes of dizziness.
There are several causes of dizziness one of them is:
1. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo(BPPV): it is an unusual sensation of motion that is triggered by certain positioning of the body like when punched on the head, or rapid change in head movement.
2. Migraine: people who often have migraine suffers from dizziness.
3. Inner ear disorder(Ménière’s disease): Ménière’s disease is a disease that affects your sense of balance and hearing. It occurs due to the excessive accumulation of fluid in the inner ear.
4. Poor blood circulation and decrease in blood volume:
health conditions such as; heart attack, hypertension, hypotension, and arrhythmia can cause poor blood circulation which can lead to dizziness. Also, a decrease in blood volume which can eventually lead to anaemia can cause dizziness.
5. Medications:
Some medications like blood pressure-lowering drugs, sedatives, tranquillizers, anti-seizure drugs, and antidepressants may have dizziness as a side effect.
6. Low blood sugar(hypoglycemia):
They experience dizziness, anxiety, lightheadedness and sweating. Also, when you feel hungry, shaky and weak, your sugar level tends to be low because the body needs energy to function well, in this case, you tend to feel dizzy.
7. Neurological conditions:
Some neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease can lead to developing a loss of balance.
8. Dehydration:
This involves inadequate fluid in the body. If you don’t drink enough fluid during the hot weather, you may experience dizziness. This is due to overheating (hyperthermia). So it is advisable to take more fluid during a hot day.
How can dizziness be cured?
- Take a lot of fluids like water, fruit juice, and so on.
- Eat a balanced diet, and eat food that contains iron such as vegetables, you can also use iron supplements.
- Have enough sleep, an average person is to sleep for a minimum of 6-7 hours per day.
- Do not overwork your body, rest in between your jobs.
