Meningitis is an infection of the brain which causes inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. A bacterial or viral infection of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord usually causes the swelling, it may begin as a complication of other illnesses such as measles, mumps, whooping cough or an ear infection.

What are the signs of meningitis?
- Fever.

- Severe headache.
- In a child; stiff neck, looks ill and lies with his head and neck bent back.
- Vomiting.

- Confusion and irritability.
- Severe muscle pain.
- Pale skin, rashes or spots on the skin.
- Babies; cry in a piercing way, and the child will remain restless and noisy.
